Musical productions continue to be a popular extracurricular offering at several schools within the
Rainy River District School Board. This spring, staff, students, parents, and the community all worked together to support three elaborate productions. Robert Moore School presented “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR.,” while J.W. Walker School staged “A Year With Frog and Toad KIDS,” and Fort Frances High School showcased “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” Students were able to participate in the productions in a variety of ways – either as part of the cast or the crew. Those not interested in acting and singing, assisted with sets and props, lighting, and stage management. The casts and crews worked for months learning songs and dances, memorizing lines, painting sets, making costumes, and gathering props. Although the productions were a lot of work, the culmination of the final performances made all the effort worthwhile. It was evident that participating in these productions developed students’ creativity, self-confidence and teamwork, as well as fostered responsibility, perseverance, inclusion and pride within the school communities.
