Local Government Week 2023 – October 16 to 20
Local Government Week (LGW) aims to increase youth and public awareness about the important role local government plays in our communities. Please join OPSBA, our member trustees and our education partners in raising civic awareness and promoting the role of trustees among Ontario students.
Tentative agreement reached with ETFO Education Workers
The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) is pleased to announce that the Council of Trustees’ Associations/School Board Associations (CTA) and the provincial government have successfully negotiated a tentative settlement on central terms of a collective agreement with the ETFO Education Workers.
OPSBA statement for Truth and Reconciliation Week
“September 30 is often a challenging day for Indigenous staff,” said Elaine Johnston, ITC Chair. “We encourage our member boards to exemplify care for Indigenous staff by increasing support or taking the lead in activity planning and facilitation for both this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and future occurrences. This must be done through continued engagement with Indigenous staff and partners. This is one small act of caring that can make activities more meaningful.”

The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association offers six annual awards to recognize outstanding contributions to public education by individuals in Ontario! While it is impossible to honour all those special people who make a difference, the recipients of these awards represent the many people who work behind the scenes and make our schools and educational system better.
Winners of the Public Property Assessment Network Scholarship announced
This $1,000 scholarship is being awarded to one recipient in each of OPSBA’s five regions.

OPSBA statement on The Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act
Our Association and local school boards must be properly consulted on the details of important changes to the public education system. We welcome the opportunity to work with the Ministry of Education on these changes as we play the most direct role in supporting student success within our local communities. Local governance, with students at the forefront, is a key part of our member boards’ ongoing success. The importance of maintaining the autonomy of democratically elected local trustees cannot be overstated.
The right schools in the right locations: OPSBA asks government to lift moratorium on school reviews
OPSBA is calling on the minister to release revised Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines as soon as possible, and at minimum – by the end of the current school year. This timeline will help ensure that boards are best able to align the new process with their annual planning cycles.

The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), in conjunction with the Council of Trustees‘ Associations, and with approval from the Crown, is pleased to announce that it has ratified the tentative agreement that was reached with the Ontario Council of Educational Workers (OCEW) on December 10, 2022.

The 2022-2026 Good Governance Guide for trustees, school boards, directors of education, and communities is now available!
OPSBA, in partnership with the Ontario Education Services Corporation (OESC), is excited to announce the release of this comprehensive guide, which has been expertly crafted to provide school trustees with the knowledge they need to effectively govern and lead their school boards. The fully updated Good Governance Guide will be distributed directly to school boards as a resource for trustees and boards for the 2022-2026 term of office.

The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) is pleased to announce that it has ratified the tentative agreement that was reached with CUPE on November 20, 2022.

The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephanie Donaldson as the Association’s new Executive Director. She will succeed W.R. (Rusty) Hick, who is retiring from the role after a rewarding career in public education.

Today, the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) and Nanos Research released new survey data regarding several public education issues ranging from education funding to curriculum, special education, equity, and governance. The associated report includes comparisons to OPSBA and Nanos’ 2019 survey.
